5 Ways to Make Your Case for Telecommuting

While you’re waiting in line for your morning latte, have you ever wondered who all those people are typing away on laptops at the coffee shop? As they nurse their drinks alongside a half-eaten muffin, you think, what do they do that they can work at Starbucks while I’m cooped up in a windowless cell? While some individuals may be freelancers, writers or students, many of them hold jobs with traditional companies who offer employees telecommuting opportunities.

Don’t Let Sniffle Season Destroy Your Office (and Sanity)

Working parents know that fall and winter can be brutal. Colds, stomach bugs and treacherous-sounding viruses and infections hop from one child to another like joyful fleas, then hitch a ride to the office. Many workers go in to work when they’re sick, either of their own volition or because they have no paid sick days. A 2013 study by the University of Pittsburg showed that about 90 precent of employees come to work when they’re knowingly sick. Why?

As an administrative assistant, I thought the option of a flex schedule was out of the question. However, when I worked up the courage to ask the question, I found that our firm offered the option of three-quarter time as a perk to all staff. It has been an adjustment, but being able to send my kids off on the bus, get my littlest to day care, then be there when the kids get off the bus at the end if the day has been the best reward.

I love the company I work for! After having my third child and struggling for a year being back to work full-time, my company approved me for mobility and allows me to work from home two to three days a week. This allows me to see my children in the morning when they wake up and put my 5-year-old twins on the bus a few days a week! There is no greater joy then seeing them wave goodbye from the bus window, and I would never have has the ability to see that with a two-hour, round-trip commute into the office!
